Every building built with a chute system must be constructed and operated within International Building Code standards (§713.11 – 713.13) to comply with basic fire safety rules. Not only will compliance avoid the potential for fines or threats from the local fire marshal, it’s a wise idea due to these serious safety considerations:
A fire inside a dirty chute is far worse than a chimney fire. Flames inside the chute column can burn trash grime and quickly spread upward to higher floors in the building. Chute intake doors must seal to control the naturally occuring upward draft of air inside the chute, and to provide a minimum fire resistance. The automatic fire safety door (discharge door) at the bottom of the chute must be operable – this function is your #1 line of defense in choking the upward draft and preventing a chute fire. There must also be an automatic sprinkler close to the bottom of the chute. Having the correct intake doors properly fitted on each floor also helps to prevent children from entering the chute or chute cavity.
